Those attending our annual convention in Minneapolis this year were treated to a delightful performance by vocalist Connie Evenson and her Quartet.

Connie is in the tradition of great female jazz vocalists. Her idol and chief influence is Peggy Lee, not a bad rôle model for any aspiring jazz singer with other enthusiasms including Dave Frishberg, the legacy of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club, bebop and, oh yes, even the Beatles. Her performances, whether in person or on recordings, cover all these areas of interest. Connie is equally at home with tender ballads, up tempo swingers, vocalese and scat and approaches all with appropriate taste and restraint, the equal of any singer on the scene, including many who are better known.

On the first CD reviewed here, Connie is accompanied by the Hot Club of Sweden Unlike most groups of this type, however, these Scandinavians are not content to look back in time but have chosen to update the legacy of the Hot Club with a more modern repertoire and with solo styles which incorporate developments of more recent years. …
