This mostly-discographical book is no doubt useful for its data, but, given that each listing is prefaced by an essay, it makes for a real discographer's treat. I'm not expert enough to winkle out any errors that perhaps exist but serious collectors of early jazz shellac would be grateful for the work that went into it. So while you won't find lengthy consideration of the subjects here, I offer you the listing of the contents, so you'll know if your tastes stray anywhere near them. And if so, it's a real bargain.

By the book's very nature, it's a ramblin' collector's varied take on 1920s- 1940s jazz releases. Although based in Canada, Tolley's obviously travelled a lot to the UK and the USA, for the commentary includes the rare issues in a given (prefix) series, whether or not they were taken from masters or were simply lower-fidelity dubs of their existing shellac cousins, and the country-to-country and series-to-series employment of the finer points of manufacture. …
