No, this has nothing to do with Maynard G. Krebbs, the fictional beatnik on the Dobie Gillis Show of TV long ago. This is Maynard Ferguson. The plain jacket design is apropos as there aren't any photographs or disc illustrations within. Rather, these 30 concise interviews with the bandleader's associates, dating from the late 1970s, give you all the colour you need of what was, apparently, an honest and straight-talking jazz boss. Maynard! includes reminiscences of Charlie Barnet, Irene Krall, and others you wouldn't at first expect to hear unless you were a indeed a Ferg-o-phile. There's a lot of good insight here, not just into the subject's career (and career choices), but of how people sought him out and got on with him.
