Double Standards

After a few false starts - Prinz magazine in Stuttgart, working for an ad agency in Frankfurt, a stint in London - Chris Rehberger set up Double Standards, specialising in the culture field, in 2000.

What were your first impressions of Berlin?

Chris Rehberger My first visit was in 1986, on a school trip. It was a terrible time, still in the cold war. It was depressing, and it was even more depressing to visit the eastern part of Berlin. I thought I'd never go back.

So what made you move there?

In 1999 I was touring with my band and had to play in Berlin opposite the Rote Rathaus, now the main town hall. We met lots of artist friends of ours, and realised that they were all living there already. That helped us decide to move to Berlin in 2000.

Why do you like working there?

In Berlin there's always something going on, and we're surrounded by artists, so it works well for us. There are some fantastic artists, including Nathalie Djurberg, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Franz Ackermann, Danh Vo, Keren Cytter, Olafur Eliasson and Michael Riedel. …
