Rinzen is a five-person collective, founded in Australia in 1999. One is now in New York, two are in Australia, and Steve and Rilla Alexander have been in Berlin since 2004.

What was the appeal of Berlin?

Steve Alexander First, there was the convenience of being in Europe, of being closer to conferences and exhibitions. People can't afford to bring you over from Australia. In 1999, Rilla and I were doing a lot of Web work with German companies. We kept coming back, made friends, and enjoyed what was happening here.

How does Berlin compare to Australia?

Rilla Alexander Since moving to Berlin, we have been able to travel more easily for exhibitions. So we have been able to make and exhibit more original pieces - which has affected the evolution of our work.

SA The quality of life is good. Really big workspaces are affordable, and there's lots of action, relative to our experience of working back home in Brisbane, which is a lot quieter. Everything touches Berlin. …
