As the spring season unfolds, digital preservation, semantics and ontologies, and publishing are all represented in the lineup of upcoming conferences and seminars.

Digital Preservation

The University of North Carolina's School of Information and Library Science is launching a second series of digital curation workshops after its initial 3-year set. The second Digital Curation Curriculum Professional Institute, which will take place May 16-21 in Chapel Hill, N.C. (DigCCurr; http j/ils. curr/aboutll.html), is titled Extending an International Digital Curation Curriculum to Doctoral Students and Practitioners. DigCCurr institutes are intensive, 5-day workshops taught by leading digital curation experts.

For those interested in preservation issues in digital photography, the 4th International Conference on: Preservation and Conservation Issues in Digital Printing and Digital Photography ( will be held May 27- 28 in London. The explosion of digital photography has introduced new types of media into the photographic process, so the conference will focus on research related to inks, substrates, and processes for producing digital prints. Among the major concerns in preservation are color changes and print durability over time, as well as the quality of prints produced by inkjet printers. This is a high-level research conference dealing with aspects of photo preservation.

A related conference is the Joint Technical Symposium on Digital Challenges and Digital Opportunities in Audiovisual Archiving (JTS 2010; to be held May 2-5 in Oslo, Norway. Organized by the Norwegian Film Institute and the National Library of Norway, this conference will discuss the preservation of images and audio materials.

Semantics and Ontologies

The organizers of the 4th International Workshop on Modular Ontologies (WoMO; www.informatik.uni-bremen .de/~okutz/womo4/index.html), which will be held May 11 in Toronto, have invited two speakers to discuss ontologies, computational creativity, and modularity (a wellknown software engineering technique used in conjunction with ontologies for simplification and maintenance). Logical and algorithmic approaches to ontologies will also be discussed.

Immediately following WoMO, the 6th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 2010; will be held May 11-14 in Toronto. The program features presentations on a variety of related topics, including natural language processing for ontology evaluation; ontologies in church administration, institutional repositories, and dental restorative treatment decisions; and scientific ontologies.

The 7th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2010;, which is scheduled for May 30-June 3 in Heraklion, Greece, will feature presentations on topics such as the semantics of web content, web usage data, natural language processing, and automated services based on reasoning with metadata and ontologies. It will also feature a tutorial program, system descriptions and demonstrations, a posters track, a Ph.D. symposium, and workshops.

Global Publishing Initiatives

The venues for most of the publishing conferences this month will be at sites outside the U.S.

* The European Association of Directory and Database Publishers is holding its annual meeting, titled New Ideas for a New Decade (EADP; .php?q=congress), May 20-21 in Mallorca, Spain. More details will be available on the website closer to the conference.
