Thoroughbred, a film from Kentucky Educational Television, airing March 8, covers turf from the Arabian Desert to Churchill Downs, offering a timeless glimpse into the history of horse racing and portraits of the aficionados who labor away, frolic, or gamble trackside in the U.S.'s oldest sport.

Europeans have been seen as strangers, colonizers, and even, more simply. Westerners in African art. Approaches to the Other range from the mocking to the imitative in "Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500 to Present," opening at the Detroit Institute of Arts April 18.

Representing the universe through symbolic diagrams, mándalas are among the hundred plus objects casting light on Asian religious tradition in "Pilgrimage and Buddhist Art," opening at the Asia Society in New York City on March 16. Other pieces from the exhibit, such as portable prayer wheels and shrines, attest to the importance of the journey itself.
