Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was out to attract the new generation of technological whiz kids around the world. But that was tough to do with the abysmally slow computers that took almost half an hour to handle large image files. For a school with more than 16,000 students, that time adds up.

"Local storage became a real hottleneck for us because we just couldn't get the throughput we needed from the local drives in order to move these images around," says Charles Border, PhD, associate director of the School of Informatics. "The files would fail, causing huge problems and lost time for students."

The school needed an upgrade and it would have to accommodate users accessing the network remotely, including students in Dubai and the Dominican Republic. New servers briefly alleviated the problem, but a lasting hardware solution was estimated to cost about US$80,000.

Instead, the university implemented VMLogix LabManager Cloud Edition last July, providing virtual labs for students at the Rochester campus and around the world. …
