GoPro Tunes: A New Outlet for Online Music Sales

Article excerpt

I am proud to announce that the AFM's new online music store, GoPro Tunes, is now accepting members' recordings for its catalog. This is a major step and an exciting development as the Federation continues to modernize the AFM and grow the AFM's relevancy to today's professional musicians.

When the President's Office and the Freelance Services Department first proposed the GoPro Tunes initiative, we had a vision of a groundbreaking new concept in the area of online music sales. Unlike other sites, such as iTunes and Amazon, our site was conceived to directly benefit AFM musicians. Other sites give only a percentage of the revenue to the musician. GoPro Tunes gives all the proceeds to the musicians, minus small processing fees charged by the credit card companies.

Hand-in-hand with that vision is the idea that musicians should decide for themselves how much to charge for their music. Under a model like iTunes, musicians have no say in the pricing of their music. Apple simply chooses the price it deems appropriate. With GoPro Tunes, musicians charge what they believe is fair, not what the distributor has decided. For example, when selling a track on iTunes, musicians cannot sell a song for more than what Apple says is allowed. At GoPro Tunes, musicians can sell their work for a higher price if they think that the market will support a higher price. This gives musicians more control over their music business.

Also appealing to musicians is GoPro Tunes' simplicity. Once a member files a Join Venture Report with their local and it is approved, they can upload a song, EP, or album to the site. The musician then complements the audio files by uploading high-quality cover art that will appear on the GoPro Tunes site and on the computers and portable music players of consumers who purchase the music. AFM Freelance Services Technical Support Specialist Matt Plummer has prepared an article for this issue (on page 16) which describes in great detail how to get started on GoPro Tunes. …
