June and July are important months for me. I love being outdoors, spending whatever beautiful days come my way in the backyard (as long as they're Saturdays or Sundays). When Robert and Julia were younger, we enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities: hide-and-seek, running bases, acting out Disney movies like Aladdin or Mulan. I always had to play the villain. When the kids were otherwise occupied, I took to the garden, puttering around, pulling weeds, planting cosmos- with decidedly amateurish results.

Being outside also brought neighbors together. Larry, the elder among us, taught all the neighborhood kids how to fish in the pond across the street from my house. Vanessa Williams, my famous neighbor, provided the pond and four of the kids.

Keeping up with a famous neighbor is exciting, and we have watched Vanessa's career with awe. …
