FOURTEEN MEMBERS OF LINCOLN PARK, NEW JERSEY'S DANCE PLACE PLUS MADE SOME WAVES WITH THEIR TAP LINE NUMBER, MOHAWK DANCE.

Yelling "bon voyage" as the Carnival Triumph-the cruise ship that set the stage for one of this year's Starbound National Talent Competitions-pulled away from New York City soon became an understatement for the dancers of Monica Portela Dybus' Dance Place Plus studio. Their trip was better than good. In fact, their tap line Mohawk Dance, for which they wore black braided wigs and custom-made costumes designed by Dybus, while tapping to original music, carried them to the Final Showcase.

When the group got to the boat's Rome Theatre at 7:20 am for Friday's competition (most skipped breakfast in exchange for a few more minutes of rest), all looked as sure-footed as they had been on land. The girls set up camp just outside the theater and, in between numbers, they raced back and forth down the aisles for shoe, costume and makeup changes. DS was close behind.
