* In the last year and a half, Sunset has tried hard to pay close attention to readers' needs in all 13 Western states. That's why Sunset reported on the Northwest's bounty in the August issue, Denver in September, and Alaska's Tongass National Forest in this issue (page 100). Look for the Southwest in December. The Travel Guide's local items, the hikes and drives in particular, have been a hit with readers, and our regionalized Garden Checklists continue to be useful to people right in their own backyards.

But with so much emphasis on other regions, we don't want to overlook the story just up the road from us. News reports that San Francisco hotel rates were among the highest in the country inspired us to see whether we could find comfortable yet affordable (under $100) rooms in the city. We found them.

We don't like to recommend things we haven't tried firsthand, so Sunset staffers volunteered to spend a night in our top picks and write up their impressions, pro and con.
