It is with sadness that we note Joe Allen Boughton's death in May, of cancer at age 76. Although he was born in Odell, Nebraska, he grew up in Cape Cod, eventually getting a history degree at Northwestern University, in the Chicago metro area. Joe married Emily Richardson in 1956 and moved to Cincinnati, until relocating to Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1962.

His bread-and-butter was in the paper and chemical industries, retiring in 2000. But Joe's passion was jazz. He began developing relationships with musicians from an early age through his father, a dentist and jazz player, and began booking performances at college.

He formed the Allegheny Jazz Society in 1984 and organized performances at the Riverside Inn in Cambridge Springs, the Conneaut Lake Hotel, for Meadville Council at the Art's Gardner Theater, at the Academy Theater in Meadville and most recently, at the Athenaeum Hotel in Chautauqua, New York.
