ACTE IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS OF THE 201 OCLIFF WEISS MEMORIAL ESSAY CONTEST THE QUESTION POSED WAS: 77HOW IS CTE AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE?'7 JESSICA NEWBOLD AND DEANNA PRUFERT ARE THIS YEAR'S WINNERS.

DID YOU KNOW THAT A DOMESTIC PIG CAN RUN about 1 1 miles per hour? I do - every time I try to trim their hooves. Did you know a llama can spit 1 1 feet? I do - every time I try to give vaccinations. Did you know rats have 16 teeth? I do - every time I am bitten while cleaning their cage. I am a veterinarian technician. All of these experiences are only a small drop in the bucket of what I have learned in my veterinarian career and technical education (GTE) class, and will continue to learn in the future.

My goal in life is to become a veterinarian. This will require a lot of schooling and a lot of tuition money to help me reach my goal. My family does not have a lot of money; what we do have we use every means feasible to make it stretch as far as possible. This is how I have grown up and it has continued over to my way of thinking about school. I do not have the money to pursue an education in one field, and change my mind halfway through because I cannot handle it, or it is not what I want to do anymore. I need to go into college with one field of study in mind, and complete it.

That is where my GTE course has come into play. I have been able to study two years as a veterinarian technician and assistant through my high school - without having to pay a dime in tuition fees. This has provided me with ample opportunities to interact with animals and learn the basics of veterinary medicine. My experiences have brought me out of the classroom environment and into the real world, where I have had to apply the knowledge that I have learned firsthand, with only a few minor bumps and bruises along the way. Most important, it has solidified in my mind the field of study that I will pursue in the future - a degree in veterinary medicine.

I have a long road ahead of me. It will take a lot of time and knowledge retention to get through college, but my GTE classes have helped to put me ahead of the other students that will be in my program of study. Not only have I learned the basics of veterinary medicine, I have also learned to be a dedicated and hard working student. Nothing means more to me than furthering my career after what I have learned through GTE. I do not know where I would be with my future education if it were not for the opportunity my school provided with GTE classes, and for this I am grateful.

"INVESTING" ALLUDES TO IMAGES OF THE CONTINUOUSLY ROLLING STOCK market ticker, or the latest online trading company commercial featuring a random "Law & Order" star. While a successful stock market venture could certainly enhance one's future, the risk of losing everything is always looming nearby. Broadly defined, to invest is "to expend for future benefits or advantages," according to The Meniam- Webst er Dictionary. When making an investment in the future, there is only one option that comes to mind which defies risk, commands respect and ensures enrichment. This is education. An investment in education requires an expenditure of time, development of organizational skills and hard work. Investment in an education is guaranteed to enhance knowledge, skills, employability, lifetime earning potential and quality of life. To actively seek out education is, inherently, an investment in the future.

Career and technical education (GTE) is based on preparing students to enter a competitive workforce through education that provides a solid knowledge base, practical skill training and the adaptability to survive and thrive. …
