Dear Andy,

My credit and collections department has been given approval to make some additions to our staff. Although the overall unemployment rate remains high, demand for credit professionals is strong in our area, and I'm concerned about attracting top candidates. What recruiting messages seem to have the most appeal for job seekers right now?

Not surprisingly, recent economic conditions have sharpened workers' focus on employment stability, and this is true for professionals of all generations, according to recent Robert Half International research. The study surveyed nearly 1,500 members of the most dominant generational groups in today's workforce- baby boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. It found that all three groups ranked "working for a stable company" and "having a strong sense of job security" as the work environment factors that were most important to them. With this in mind, it makes sense to emphasize your company's competitive salaries, benefits, stability and reputation, assuming it can rightfully promote its strength in these areas. In particular, if you've been able to protect core jobs during the recession, this should be a strong selling point

Make sure, too, that the salaries you're offering new hires are on par with the marketplace, ff possible, offer compensation that is slightly above what competitors in your area are paying for similar positions. …
