More than thirty million texts exist in Sanskrit, making it the largest collection of writings in any language before the invention of the printing press. Yet the most recent comprehensive lexical resource is over a hundred years old; the last attempt, in the 194Us, never got beyond the letter A. Now, Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, is teaming up with the Institute of lndology and Tamil Studies of Cologne University in Germany to provide wide online access to the digital Sanskrit library and to extend and improve the lexical resources of the language.

This project is one of five grants awarded this past summer through an NEH joint program with the German Research Foundation to support groundbreaking digital humanities projects. One is a partnership between the Getty Research Institute, the Heidelberg University Library, and the Art Library of the Berlin State Museums to create an open, searchable database of German art auction catalogs dating from 1930 to 1945. …
