The headlines topping the news in mid-September were selfexplanatory: "Experts Say U.S. Recession Ended in June 2009." The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), which has the final say on when recessions begin and end, reported that the troubled economic times we have endured (aka, the "Great Recession") ended in the middle of last year after 18 months. You may wonder, as I did, why it took so long to hear about it? The truth is that the NBER's Business Cycle Dating Committee waited for more than a year for several just-published governmental stats to confirm that "it was clear that a meaningful recovery had begun." While we understand that the economic recovery is far from over, you could almost hear a collective sigh of relief.

In the information technology industry, that "meaningful recovery" means the wave of innovation we've seen in recent months is bound to continue. Just take a look at the three top stories on IT's front page this month, from "Five Trends Shaking Up the Internet" to "Viacom v. …
