Rabbis, priests, Buddhist monks, Mormons, Muslims, consular officials and law enforcement leaders from the FBI and LAPD, along with L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca, stood united on the podium at the Islamic Center of Los Angeles at noon on Sept. 11 to commemorate the victims and families of 9/11/2001.

Salam al-Marayati, president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council-L.A., noted that while many have been exploiting anti-Muslim sentiments in the days leading to Sept. 11, those present wanted to share the spirit of unity all Americans felt during the initial aftershock of 9/11/2001.

Stated Rabbi Steve Jacobs: "We celebrated the [Jewish] high holidays Thursday and Eid al-Fitr Friday, and I wish the world could see how we get along. During the Nazi period, the people remained silent when books were burned. When books were threatened to be burned now [in the U.S.] we did not remain silent when a preacher who was not historical, but hysterical, called for it. …
