SANTA MONICA

I want dramatic impact, but no fussy flowers. Ideas?

I love chalky blues. Agave, Oudleya, Senecio - all those glaucous plants look fabulous in strong, bright light. And most of them have bold shapes too. They give a garden instant drama.

What should I pair them with?

Variegated green or bronze phormium and one of the coppery sedges is a favorite combination. Then orange flowers - Zauschneria or kangaroo paw - for a bit more punch.

But I also want a sustainable garden. What then?

I'd use the whole range of nongreen greens: grays like Spanish lavender, gray-greens like Westringia, and blue-greens like Euphorbia. Plus some variegation with cream or white, such as Phormium cookianum Tricolor'. It's a cool, soothing look, and these plants are all waterwise.

A COOL SPOT IN THE SUN

Backdrop

Golden bamboo (Phyllostachys aurea) creates a soft green screen that doesn't compete with the sculptural plants in this sunny Santa Monica border. So does the silvery blue 'Goodwin Creek Grey' lavender behind the phormium.

Theme

Subtle pinks and blues make up this border. Pink Echeveria 'Afterglow' dots the carpet of gray-blue Dymondia margaretae, repeating the hues of the larger plants. "I use ribbons of color - a sort of running stitch - to unify the border," says Gabriela Yariv.

Accent

A bronze-tinged 'Sundowner' phormium is striking beside an icy blue Aaave attenuata 'Nova'. "I rarely place two plants side by side that share the same tones," Gabriela says.
