Elephant Pharmacy to Open in Berkeley

Elephant Pharmacy is not some public relations stunt dreamed up by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, nor will you need a bag of peanuts to shop there. It is, however, a new drugstore concept that is poised to debut in Berkeley, Calif., next month.

Reinventing the traditional retail pharmacy model, Elephant will be a large-scale health products store, offering a complete set of traditional and complementary health and wellness product choices in addition to full pharmacy services.

While its name might draw questions from shoppers, according to its CEO, Lisa Clausen, the name was chosen because "like the elephant, our store will be big, gentle, and intelligent

"What makes our store different from traditional drugstores is that we will offer both conventional and complementary healthcare products as well as comprehensive product information that has never before been made available to customers in a retail pharmacy," explained Clausen.

In addition to its pharmacy, the store will feature OTC products one would expect to find in a more traditional drugstore. In addition, there will be an extensive selection of herbal and dietary supplements, including some that have never before been offered in U.S. retail locations. The store will also offer a unique selection of flowers, natural cosmetics, gifts, body care products, cards, stationery, and accessories, as well as a high-quality one-hour photo lab.

"We plan to offer a higher level of service, more credible information, and healthier alternative products," said Clausen. "I believe the result will be a better experience for the customer. …
