'Gordon Brown to be deported to Scotland' ran the headline of the revamped Metro freesheets flying from the hands of distributors outside London tube stations in early July. Over 50 activists in white caps and MetrO branded t-shirts handed out thousands of the spoof newspapers in an attempt to draw attention to 'racist' Immigration controls and the 'uncritical scaremongering' of the rightwing press.

Associated Newspapers Ltd, owner of the 'real' Metro, which it claims has 3 million readers across the UK, acted ruthlessly against the action, taking out a high court injunction that called a halt to the production and distribution of the spoofs and ordered all copies to be returned. But the company's lawyers were shooting in the dark; the only group available for them to condemn for the stunt was 'Press Action' - a loose coalition of anti-racist and migrant-rights groups - and they could not put forward individual names for prosecution. …
