U.S. Army Presents NRPA, USOC, and 11 Park and Recreation Agencies with Citations for Work with Injured Veterans

AT THEANNUAL National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Congress in Minneapolis, Minnesota, representatives from the U.S. Army and the Department of Defense presented 11 park and recreation agencies, NRPA, and the United States Olympic Committee with citations of patriotic civilian, service for their work on adaptive recreation programs for injured service members and veterans. The citations were signed by Lieutenant General Rick Lynch, Army Chief .of Staff for Installation Management (ACSIM) and presented by NRPA members Carol Potter (Department of Defense), Janet MacKinnon, and Sandra Nordenhold.

These 11 agencies and others across the couniry are working with soidierS who are returning home from Iraq' and Afghanistan with physical injuries, traumatic brain .injuries, and post traumatic stress disorder. Successful programs, like these, use sports and therapeutic recreational activities to offer veterans the ability to achieve success in a short period of time, as a result of returning to their families and communities and regaining confidence.

"These communities and organizations are commended for reaching out to our service members to provide a variety of recreation opportunities and physical-activities," said Carol Potter, a representative of the the Department of Defense. NRPA adopted a policy in 2008 which challenged its members to support service members and their families in the Armed Forces. …
