David's memory is playing him false. The Local Government Association Labour Group regularly 'rocked the boat' during the lifetime of the last government. We opposed capping, foundation hospitals, the nationalisation of school funding, ring-fencing, excessive targetry. and the failure to act on the Raynsford and Lyons reviews of council finance. I personally led the campaign that saw the abandonment of proposals for directly elected police authorities.

David is right on target. The coalition government is centralising, thinking it knows better than local authorities. This government does not believe in local representative democracy and local accountability.

After the current dose of coalition government, I would think that a vote in favour of AV is far from certain because it would result in the Liberal Democrats shuttling from one coalition to another in perpetuity and nobody would know what they were voting for or where the buck stops. …
