TEND HOUSEPLANTS Once a month, when temperatures are above 50°, take plants outdoors and rinse with a hose until water drains from the bottom. This removes dust, insect pests, and salt buildup in soils. After rinsing, fertilize and get plants back indoors right away.

WATER CHRISTMAS TREES Cut off the bottom inch of the trunkwhenyouget your tree home, then put the tree in a reservoir base. Keep water topped off - at first, that'll mean twicedaily watering.

Protect trees

Those with trunks less than 4 inches in diameter are highly susceptible to sunscald and rodent damage. Starting from the bottom, cover the trunk with tree wrap (available at garden centers) up to the point where branches begin. Secure with tape, not staples or tacks, which can damage the bark.
