The NEH-supported documentary Freedom Riders is one of ten films circulating as part of Film Forward: Advancing Cultural Dialog, an initiative sponsored by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Sundance Institute. Beginning this winter, five American and five international films will be screened in seven American localities (Nashville; Jackson, Mississippi; Washington, D.C.; San Juan, Puerto Rico; The Bronx; Pleasantville, New York; and the Saginaw Chippewa Reservation in Michigan) and also in Tunisia, Morocco, China, Turkey, Uganda, and Kenya.

The program is intended to foster cross-cultural exchange through independent film. According to the PCAH announcement, "contemporary and independent films and artists are ideal for bridging different cultures, not only in the diversity of artistic approaches, cultural traditions, and political views of the films, but in meeting a very important need in engaging audiences . …
