What is the school-to-work connection for business education? This is a question many business educators are debating.

Business educators must approach school-to-work in a proactive way. It is an opportunity for business educators to:

share program successes;

revise and update program curriculum;

add creative spark to business education programs; and

grow professionally.

By approaching school-to-work in a proactive way business educators can increase their credibility and visibility. But first they must become educated in the schoolto-work arena.

Get educated. Business educators must take the time to read articles about school-to-work. These articles can provide information on the foundation, models and overall structure of school-towork. They also should attend school-to-work professional development activities. Another proactive strategy is to become familiar with the School-to-Work Opportunities Act.

Get involved. Business educators should become members of school-to-work committees in their school or district. These committees might be responsible for forming and maintaining business and community partnerships. Business educators also should participate in developing the career pathways or clusters for business education. …
