What is Virtual Private Networking (VPN) and why should I care? VPN is a very secure and cost-effective way of connecting remote users and sites to a central or headquarters office. Historically, large companies using dedicated lines between office or dialing the central office with a modem connection accomplished this. It was costly, sometimes unpredicatble, and in some cases a lot of hardware was needed. VPN takes a connection to the Internet and allows a secure connection to the central office.

The advantages to this technology are cost and simplicity. For the same, low unlimited monthly usage fee I play to connect to the Internet, I can also connect to my cent office. I never have make a long distance call to conn to the cra office because my Internet Service Provit (ISP) can provide me with local numbers to call instead. I can then access files I was working on, e-mail co-employess, and even access a company intranet.

Setting up a VPN is about as simple as the concept itself. …
