Wally Amos

In 1975, long before there were food personalities like Emeril Lagasse, Paul Newman and Nigella Lawson, Wally Amos came up with the idea that as an entertainment personality he could sell his gourmet chocolate chip cookies. Borrowing $25,000 from friends, Amos opened his first freestanding store, on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, California, that sold only cookies: The Famous Amos Chocolate Chip Cookie store. Soon the entrepreneur became a national personality renowned not only for his cookies but for his ebullient and outgoing persona as well.

In 1985, the company changed hands and it is now owned by the Kellogg Company. Amos eventually returned to baked goods through Uncle Wally's Muffin Company.

Amos always wanted to use his wide recognition as a means to draw attention to an important causeliteracy. He served as the national spokesperson for Literacy Volunteers of America from 1979 to 2002. In 2005, Amos and his wife, Christine, founded the Read it LOUD! Foundation ( to encourage parents and caregivers to read aloud to children for at least 10 minutes each day. Read it LOUD recently partnered with the Library of Congress and the United States Postal Service to launch a national campaign. NCEA is a national partner to the reading program.

Bishop Matthew Clark

Bishop Matthew Clark of Rochester will deliver the opening address for the 35th anniversary NPCD Convocation. His book, "Forward in Hope: Saying Amen to Lay Ecclesial Ministry," examines the growing significance of layecclesial ministry and the way it is changing the face of the church.

In the Diocese of Rochester and other areas of the country, lay ecclesial ministers are administering the daily operations of numerous parishes and serving in crucial roles in youth, music and religious education ministry, among other ministries.

Bishop Clark was installed as the eighth bishop of Rochester in June 1979 and he has served the Diocese of Rochester for more than 30 years.
