Randy Weston has been a professional pianist and bandleader for much of his eighty four years. Originally inspired by the late swing stylists, he soon fell in with Thelonious Monk and Wynton Kelly, playing a long apprenticeship with Rhythm and Blues and bebop groups before being won over by traditional African music in the 1960's. His initial love for Duke Ellington is expressed in his immensely colorful and expressive playing as well as in his abilities composing longer works, including his three part African Cookbook Suite included here.

While his professional life has taken him around the world (including a long stay in Morocco on the late 1960's and early 70s), Weston is rooted in American Jazz sounds of the 1950s. …
