While remakes of classic old tunes (never mind classic old albums) are never high on my list, this one makes the grade and in fact may even improve on the original. Steve Richman details his family connection to the original Sketches of Spain album in the notes and recreating it was clearly a labor of love for him.

His Harmonie Ensemble is a well-regarded group with a core personnel of New York studio and classical musicians. Here, the winds are featured playing Gil Evans' original arrangements and compositions made famous on his and Miles Davis' Columbia album of 1960.

As with the original, the only soloist is the trumpet - the classic Davis part is assumed by Lew Soloff. A long career encompassing an extraordinary array of styles (including membership in Blood, Sweat & Tears, the Lincoln Center Jazz Band and with Gil Evans' last regular groups) has brought Soloff to this point. His reading of the original trumpet parts blend elements of Davis' original solos (a considerable amount of which were actually composed by Evans) and his own conceptions. …
