Sathima Bea Benjamin was born at Johannesburg in 1936 so she would have been in her 40s when she made these recordings, made for her own Ekapa Records. This review copy is a Japanese reissue. It couldn't have been easy to have a jazz career in South Africa under the Apartheid regime. She met Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and they became an item. But they both were compelled to emigrate, first to Switzerland and later throughout Europe. …
