I'd sooner be lucky than good. This CD came into my life quite by accident. A friend and I had attended a concert by the Airmen of Note, that well-travelled US Air Force Jazz Band. The tune The Next Step caught both of us by surprise. A check on the Tom Lord Discography tune index showed it had been issued and, well, this CD rocks!

The title tune was written by the pianist and sets the pace for most of this session. It is straight ahead bop featuring tenor sax, trumpet and piano in the solos. Don't Blame Me is taken at a nice ballad pace, nicely nuzzling the melody, with the trumpeter having good sense to lay out and not spoil the mood. …
