Tenorman Mike Cuozzo could probably have been classified as a semi-pro musician. During his twenties, he played professionally with several bands including Joe Marsala, Bob Astor, Tommy Reynolds, Elliott Lawrence and the Shep Fields' all reed band but he soon recognized that as a full time performing musician, not only was his ability to earn a livelihood limited but, all too often, he would be subject to playing music in which he did not believe. Therefore, in partnership with his brother, he became a building contractor, reportedly a very successful one, in his home town of Caldwell, New Jersey. He continued to play, however, but with the luxury of playing only such music as he liked and respected. …
