Canadian Symposium on El Sistema:

Music Education and Social Change

Theme: Music Education and Social Change

Focus: El Sistema

Can El Sistema, the internationally acclaimed music program that helped lift children from the teeming slums of Caracas, Venezuela, be a new model of success for music education with youth-at-risk in North America, in general, and Canada in particular?

As part of the 2011 Leading Music Education International Conference (LME) at the University of Western Ontario (www.lme.uwo.ca) the El Sistema Symposium will take place on Sunday, May 29, 2011 and will consist of addresses and presentations in the morning followed by a round-table discussion in the afternoon.

The Canadian Symposium on El Sistema will allow interested stakeholders and music educators to examine whether and, if so, how the Venezuelan program can translate into an American/Canadian context. It will also act as a clearinghouse for sharing national lessons and establishing a network for support and information. In addition, the symposium aspires to identify the needs, challenges, and best practices of El Sistema initiatives in Canada.

The ultimate goal of the El Sistema Symposium is the creation of a national El Sistema group that will represent Canada in a newly formed Special Interest Group of the International Society for Music Education (ISME) and collaborate on this issue with international colleagues at ISME's 2012 conference in Thessaloniki, Greece.

We feel your participation in this symposium will be an asset and hope you will be able to join us in this very important gathering. …
