Faith in Students Is Adviser's Secret

Given all of the projects the Tennessee State University campus chapter is involved with, adviser Harriete Bias Insignares sometimes doesn't know which end is up.

"We're turning into such a big business that I don't know how I'm going to continue with this with the full-time job I have," she said.

But, the recipient of the David L. Eshelman Outstanding Campus Adviser Award seems to know exactly what she's doing: actively promoting the future of journalism and shaping her students into role models for future journalism students.

For Insignares, this award punctuates those initiatives.

"It means to me that people do pay attention to you when you try to do something of value," she said. "It also means to me that being enthusiastic about your work can pay off. I feel that so far this is the highlight of my career."

Under Insignares' leadership, the chapter publishes a newsletter, broadcasts a campus public affairs program and works through both conferences and mentoring programs to encourage high school students to keep writing. …
