AAA Annual Meeting Celebrates Year's Achievements

At the American Arbitration Association's annual meeting for 2001, held this past May in New York, William K. Slate IT, president and CEO, said that the Association's activities throughout the year underscored important continuing themes that "can be summed up in a single phrase: leadership in our field."

One such theme, Slate said, was "the steady expansion of the resources we offer our members." This includes expanding the AAA's ability to serve in a global marketplace by opening the International Centre for Dispute Resolution in Dublin, signing a cooperative agreement with CIETAC in the People's Republic of China, and continuing support for the Global Center for Dispute Resolution Research.

The "unwavering pursuit of excellence in the field of dispute resolution" and "a willingness to innovate" were other themes. Slate cited the opening of the fourth and last regional case management center in Rhode Island, the development of the AAA WebFile online dispute resolution service offering, business-to-business dispute resolution capability through the Internet, new touch-screen voting systems, and the launch of Web R.A.D.I.O., which allows neutrals to continue their training on the Internet, as examples.

Of special importance in the report of the AAA's accomplishments in 2001 were its efforts to further fairness in consumer dispute resolution. As Slate told his audience, "Nowhere is fairness more a topic of debate than in safeguarding the interests of consumers in an arbitration setting." Slate said that by implementing rule and procedure changes, the Association was able to provide broader safeguards to consumers involved in arbitration. …
