Medication Adherence to Be Focus of PQA/URAC Summit

Reimbursement and medication adherence issues will be front and center at the PQAAJRAC Medication Adherence Summit in Washington, D.C., June 2 and 3. The Pharmacy Quality Alliance and URAC are sponsoring the summit at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in conjunction with PQAs annual meeting on June 1 to 2.

The summit is addressing timely issues; the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized rules on reimbursing payers for medication therapy management and medication adherence. 'When CMS starts evaluating health plans on medication adherence, there will be some natural synergies and alignments [for pharmacies]. Heretofore, they have not been evaluated on a lot of metrics," said Laura Cranston, executive director of PQA.

Important medication adherence case studies will be presented. Jesse McCu I lough, PharmD, field manager of clinical services for Rite Aid, will review the chains work with The Pennsylvania Collaborative. Participants in the Collaborative, including High mark, a division of Blue Cross Blue Shield, are examining how to build an effective MTM pay-for-perfoimance model. "Some MTM programs are reimbursing pharmacies for interventions. If a chain or independent can help a health plan hit that target, that's how you develop a pay-for-performance model" Cranston said. …
