Zhai Yongming began publishing her poems in 1981 and soon established herself as one of the foremost poets in China. Her collection Woman, written in 1984 and first published in 1985, was credited with introducing a feminist consciousness into Chinese poetry. She has experimented with different poetic styles and subjects in her work, but there is a consistently keen attention to sensorial experiences of space (both everyday lived space and the emotional space of the mind-body). The poems that appear here were written in 1999 and 2000 and published in the collection Finally Making Me Insolvent. Her work from this period draws on a diverse body of materials, including classical poetry, classical ghost stories, life in Chengdu, art installations, her experiences living abroad, and her experiences at her bar, White Nights. …
