The recent news that the last typewriter manufacturer was closing shop created quite the media buzz.

Initially, Edward Michael, sales general manager at Swintec, a New Jersey-based typewriter company, upon reading the reports on the typewriters' demise, thought it had to be a big mistake. "Wot so fast - we are a typewriter company, and we are alive and doing very well," Michael said in a telephone interviewwith CNN.

Michael said he couldn't recall exact sales figures but his company, which started in 1978, sold "in the thousands" to private dealers, prisons andgovernment offices.

One of Swintec's most robust markets? Prisons.

"We have contracts with correctional facilitiesin 43 states to supply clear typewriter for inmates so they can't hide contraband inside them, "We even make clear cassette ribbons for them. …
