More than twice as many chain store executives as independent pharmacy owners believe that increasing the number of technicians in their stores will boost profits, according to the annual Drug Topics/Hospital Pharmacist Report Business Outlook poll. Some 61% of the independents said that raising the technician-to-pharmacist ratio would have no impact on their finances.

These were some findings obtained from eight questions about the financial impact of several current pharmacy issues that we posed to retail R.Ph.s in our annual business outlook survey. In general, independent store owners were less positive than chain headquarters officials in their responses to the eight questions. The lone exception dealt with settlement of a class action pricing lawsuit that includes a ban against class-of-trade discounts that benefit HMO and mail-service pharmacies. On that question, about 6% more of the independents felt they would benefit financially.

Moving on to the other questions, fewer independents than chains viewed reforms at the Food & Drug Administration positively; the same was true of the financial impact of pharmacist reimbursement for training diabetics in selfcare. …
