An £8 Om social investment fund to reduce poverty and boost employment in Northern Ireland has been agreed.

Some areas have yet to see the benefits of peace and stability, First Minister Peter Robinson said as he announced the fund. 'Given the economic and fiscal situation there is a real risk that deprivation will continue and may increase unless interventions are put in place,' he said.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness added: 'The most immediate and effective way out of deprivation is through quality employment. However, there are substantial barriers to employment and full participation in the economy for deprived communities.'

The Northern Ireland Executive is to adopt an integrated approach, with departments working together. …
