Rallies Support Palestine Becoming U.N. Member State

Students for Statehood (SFS) held a series of rallies and actions across the United States on Sunday, Sept. 4, to support Palestine becoming the 194th member state of the United Nations. The Washington, DC protest in front of the White House occurred on the same day during Labor Day weekend as rallies in New York City and Albany, NY; Philadelphia, PA; Blacksburg, VA; Chicago and Jacksonville, IL; Cleveland, OH; Minneapolis, MN; Sacramento, CA; and Boise, ID. SFS advocates for Palestine's admission to the U.N. because it will increase the chances of reaching a just and lasting peace for the Palestinian people and an end to Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine.

Students from the University of Maryland, George Washington University, Georgetown, American University, George Mason, University of Virginia and University of the District of Colombia gathered to chant: "People, people can't you see. Palestine should be free," "Peace, not war. Member state 194," and "We are ready, we won't wait. Palestine as a member state."

Kira Stoykl, who taught English at Bourj el Barajneh camp in Lebanon, was there to support the resolution, she said, because, "They want a home. They've been waiting 63 years. …
