Article excerpt

The American Impressionist Society holds its 12th annual National luried Exhibition from October 15 to November 15. Mountainsong Galleries, in Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA, hosts this year's show featuring more than 170 works by member artists. The artists range from outdoor landscape aficionados to in-studio still-life and figure devotees, all of whom paint with an "emphasis on capturing light by using strokes of broken color to create a dazzling impression of the subject."

An opening reception and awards ceremony on Friday, October 21, begins at 8:30 p.m. A private patrons' party takes place on Friday, October 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. and requires advance reservations and a deposit of $500 that can be applied to art purchases. Member artists whose work is included in the exhibition include the following painters.

Whether using oil, watercolor, or pastel, Kathryn McMahon sees her plein-air paintings as her way of "writing a story with color." Daria Shachmut seeks to capture the essence of the animals she paints in few but bold brush strokes.

In her painterly depictions of the city, Michele Byrne seeks to meld art and life on canvas. Her works in oil are artistic snapshots of the bustle of urban life. Dallas artist Cecy Turner renders the vastness of the quiet western landscape by employing oil and watercolor to simplify the vista and reflect the earthy tonalities of the plains.

Oil painter Mark Daly devotes considerable time to visually arranging his compositions and allows nature to guide him with color and value while injecting personal interpretation. Mary Garrish interprets the impermanence of existence with a "subtle interplay of light, color, and space that is always evident in every subject."

D. Lee says she never tires of going afield to gather reference material for her animal and wildlife paintings and portraits because animals have always been such an intrinsic part of her life. …
