Five-Minute Interview: Randy Thurman

Rish Management Magazine recently spoke with Randy Thurman, director of risk management for Gaylord EntertainmenL Company, about the past year, job requirements for the risk manager, recent news, RIMS' activities and this December issue of RM.

Thurman is currently RIMS' vice president-governance and secretary. From 1998 to 1999 he was president of the RIMS Cumberland (central Tennessee) chapter and also served as chairman of the Dixie Regional RIMS Conference in 1997. He has worked on several RIMS committees, including the conference programming committee from 1996 to 2000, and has served as vice president-conferences and vice president-member and chapter services. He also currently serves on the insurance liaison committee for the Department of Business at Middle Tennessee State University.

Prior to joining the Nashville, Tennessee-based Gaylord in 1998, Thurman worked as an insurance broker for seventeen years and as an underwriter for five years.

1. What is the best risk management lesson you have learned this year?

It's a repeat of past year's lessons, which is, in a difficult marketplace, honesty is the byword and the best policy, especially given the spate of corporate scandals this year.
