HAVE A BETTER Evening

Article excerpt

When you can't get your kids to answer with more than a grunt, try these tactics.

1

Be patient

Wait at least a half hour before asking about school so your child has a chance to decompress. Let him have a snack and relax first.

2

Get specific

Ask pointed questions to elicit more than a "fine." Try "What did you play at recess and who with?" instead of "How was school?"

3

Go first

Share upbeat details about your ride to work or a new assignment, and your kid just might mimic your chitchat enthusiasm.
