Tidy Up Together

Bring some surprises to spring cleaning so your kids will want to pitch in, says Alex Kelly of MaidPro. Her top tips to conquering clutter as a family:

Make it a contest.

Stage a little competition to get your kids pumped about cleaning the closets. Have them sort through their stuff for old clothes, toys, books and DVDs to give to charity. In the end, the person with the biggest pile wins.

Try a surprise pick.

Place pieces of paper with jobs written on them in a baseball cap. Each person picks a job from the hat, and when one job is finished, the person gets to pick out another surprise job. The one who finishes the most jobs merits a prize.

Put on music.

Instead of racing against the ticktock of a timer, blast music and tell the kids they have until the end of the song to do a specific activity, like cleaning under the bed or putting their dirty clothes in a bin and taking it to the laundry room. Dancing is optional.
