First Day Jitters

going back to school may be a mixed bag of excitement and butterflies. Help calm your child's nerves with these tips.

take a trial run. ask if you can visit the school and/or meet with the teacher before the first day. if not, try to get hold of a class list and point out any students your child already knows so she can look forward to familiar faces.

pack a memento. Put a snip of her favorite blankie in her lunchbox or attach a photo key chain with an image of you both to her backpack. a small "transitional object" can help her feel safe and remind her of family.

Be a good listener. children have different fears. rather than telling her everything is going to be okay, listen to her. is she worried about making new friends or what they'll be serving for cafeteria lunch? talk things through, ease her mind and offer a reassuring hug.
