"babies have heightened senses, so overstimulation can keep them awake," says coren. cool colors like blues, greens and neutrals are ideal for relaxation, and blackout shades let you completely darken the room. while you might think silence will keep your baby from waking up, playing cDs with white noise or heartbeats that mimic the sounds of the womb can help with sleep. (remember that bright colors and various sounds stimulate baby brain development outside the nursery.)

moms often can't resist midnight tiptoes into the nursery, so the flooring should be soft and quiet. "i love FLor carpet tiles because they come in a multitude of mix-and-match patterns and colors and are comfy to crawl and walk on," says coren. …
