This is the first two recordings under the leadership of this very talented young trumpet player. He is only 30 years old at this writing. I was fortunate enough to have the radio on in my automobile one day and the tune " Sentimental Journey" was being performed from his first CD. I could hardly wait until they announced who performed this gem. His tone is so pure and after listening to several of his recordings I find that this is true in all ranges, with high notes that don't screech, or at times like a flugelhorn. A very gifted and disciplined player. He is now professor of trumpet and jazz studies at Duquesne University and also serves as a clinician at various schools beside being a performer and composer and arranger. A busy lad indeed.

We shall look at his initial CD first. The tunes "Gullish" and "At The Last Minute" are hard bop and they swing hard too. Tia Fuller is the composer on one tune on each CD and on this one it is the title tune. She plays sax on most of the tunes but here it is a fine flute effort on this quiet ballad. "You Are My Everything" is also taken as a nice ballad as is the last tune, the Ray Noble effort "The Very Thought Of You" On the latter tune it is a trumpet and piano duet as is also "God Bless The Child". "Searching" on the other hand is a fast moving Latin piece. "The Serpent" goes at an irregular rhythm and is a rather intense writing. …
