BLACK TO QUIT NEXT YEAR

New auditor general to be appointed

Bob Black is retiring as auditor general for Scotland, a position he has held since it was created in 2000. He will stay in the post until a successor is appointed, probably in spring next year. He was previously controller of audit and chief executive with the Accounts Commission and before then served as a council chief executive in Tayside and Stirling councils.

Tax boost for Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's only intercontinental air link has been handed a tax break to help it survive. Continental Airlines' flight from Belfast to Newark, New Jersey, was being jeopardised by the Republic of Ireland's lower rate of air passenger duty. Chancellor George Osborne has responded by allowing the NI government to cut the tax for long-haul flights to the short-haul rate. …
